National Greening Program - Region 1
Conserving sites must be a community effort at a national scale. In Mangatarem, People’s Organizations (POs) have partnered with Haribon to bring back their forests by supporting the National Greening Program (NGP), after the DENR Region I and Haribon Foundation entered into a Memorandum of Agreement to facilitate NGP implementation in Mangatarem.
Latest updates from the field
The partnership resulted in mobilizing support from three (3) environmental People’s Organizations (POs): Samahang Masipag at Matitiyagang Mamamayan ng Pacalat (SMMMP), Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan ng Calomboyan Sur na Sasagip at Mangangalaga sa Kalikasan (SANAMACAKASAMAKA), and Nagkakaisang Mamamayan ng Catarataraan sa Pangangalaga ng Kalikasan (NAGMACAPAK).
The POs supplied planting stock of forest trees and fruit trees to support the NGP while the project gave partner POs an opportunity to enhance their capacity and capability on nursery management, seedling production and propagation. Consequently, awareness was raised among the POs and their members on forest management and biodiversity conservation.
In 2014, DENR Region 1 renewed the partnership agreement with Haribon to strengthen and continue NGP implementation in Mangatarem. Haribon conducted various capacity building activities such as regular technical discussions on seedlings propagation, nursery management, planting and maintenance. We helped draft livelihood proposals on forest protection and patrolling equipment, materials for the Bantay Gubat Organization, and Palay Rice Trading for the PO Federation.
Provide guidance to NGP implementation on seedling propagation, nursery management, planting and maintenance alongside partner People’s Organizations (POs) in Mangatarem, Pangasinan.
